>> looks like one massive smoke and flames. you can see it working its way up the hill. >> get clear! >> major: hundreds of firefighters are battling the blazing fires while residents face destruction and loss. >> there is nothing to look at. it's the foundation. that's all that's left. >> major: the "cbs evening news" starts now. ♪ ♪ i'm major garrett in for norah o'donnell. california's largest wildfire of the year is 0% contained and tearing across the northern part of the state at a ferocious speed, driven by unpredictable winds. at this time on wednesday, the park fire had burned about two square miles. 48 hours later, it has exploded, burning more than 250 square miles. that's five times the size of san francisco. thousands of people have been forced to evacuate as the flames allegedly sparked by an arsonist, ripped through homes, buildings, and cars be at fires are burning across the west and into canada, where a

monster wildfire there has destroyed about a third of the structures in the resort town of jasper. we have reports from across the region, and cbs's jonathan vigliotti will start us off from northern california. >> reporter: tonight, crews are struggling to contain this massive fire. we are talking flames several hundred feet high. extreme wind is in the forecast through this evening. the concern now being these flames will be pushed out of the woods and into neighborhoods. california's largest wildfire explodes. the park fire, now so big, it's clearly seen on satellite. over 175,000 acres burned. authorities now zeroing in on this car, which the d.a. says was set on fire and pushed into a gully. the suspected driver, 42-year-old ronnie stout, now faces a charge of arson. the fire has already destroyed well over 100 structures, and forced thousands to flee.

this fire now dangerously close to the town of paradise, destroyed nearly six years ago. 85 people were killed. the extreme wildfire danger now stretching into canada my colleague, carter evans, is near the hard-hit town of jasper, alberta. >> reporter: this is alberta's premiere right here. she is head of the provincial government. outside of jasper, the fire command post for a first-hand look. >> reporter: parts of the town are apocalyptic. or about a third of the buildings here were damaged or destroyed, more than 25,000 tourists and residents evacuated ahead of the flames, including john clark. happened to your home? >> it's gone. completely. yeah, it's gone. there is nothing to look at, it's a foundation. that's all that's left. >> reporter: but he plans to rebuild. jasper national park is considered a crown jewel for canada, much like yosemite or

yellowstone. >> together, we'll get through this, and we'll build back. and no matter what comes, we are not going to lose the enduring magic of jasper. >> reporter: fortunately, the weather right now is cooperating. it's been in the 40s overnight, and it's been raining, and park officials say that's pretty much extinguished the flames in the town of jasper, but the wildfire is still burning in the surrounding forest. it's about the size of detroit, and that means residents might not be allowed home for weeks. major? >> major: so much building back to do. carter evans, thank you p or now to election 2024, where vice president kamala harris received a big boost with an endorsement from a former president and first lady, and all the republican side, as cbs's robert costa reports, vice presidential nominee j.d. vance is standing by comments he made about "childless cat ladies." >> hey there. >> hi! you are both together. >> reporter: vice president kamala harris is enormous week culminated with a strong

information in his police reports. >> seven months on, how are you still employed by us? >> i don't know. >> reporter: state records show grayson resigned in april 2023 and was hired by sangamon county three days la later. defense officials tell cbs news that in 2016, grayson was discharged for misconduct from the army after he was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, one of two dui charges on his record. >> why did he even have a job as a sheriff's deputy? after those red flags? >> reporter: grayson was fired from the sheriff's office and has pleaded not guilty to the murder charges. when reached by cbs news today, his attorney declined to comment. rallies are planned here in chicago and across the country over the next few days, calling for justice for massey and other black americans killed by police. major? >> major: with important new details, roxana saberi, thank you p or tonight, two of

the world's most powerful drug lords are in u.s. custody, including the son of former kingpin joaquin "el chapo" guzman. both charged with flooding the united states with drugs like fentanyl and cocaine. cbs's manuel bojorquez reports the federal agents used trickery and deception to make the ar arrest. >> reporter: this photo obtained by cbs news shows 76-year-old ishmael and mayo" zambada, a leader of the sinaloa cartel, just before he was duped and branded by law enforcement after a month-long operation to capture him. cbs news has learned zambada thought he was flying to see property in northern mexico thursday but was instead flown to a small airport outside el paso, texas, and probably arrested. he was lured to come according to multiple sources, by someone close to him. joachim guzman, a top guard cartel official, and son of the notorious drug kingpin known as el chapo. an act of betrayal.

the reason he cooperated, not immediate lead disclosed. >> the justice department will not rest until every single cartel leader, member, and associate responsible for poisoning our communities is held accountable. >> reporter: the men are accused of running one of those powerful and ruthless criminal organizations in the world. the dea says the sinaloa cartel generates billions each year and is the largest supplier of synthetic drugs like fentanyl into the u.s. it's helped fuel an overdose epidemic nearly 75,000 americans die from synthetic opioids last year. guzman is excited to face a judge in chicago next week. zambada pleaded not guilty, i should say, today in el paso. he's been quoted in the past as saying that should he be captured, their plans for the cartel to continue, so drugs likely will still flow to the north as long as there is a market for them. major? >> major: as long as there is

>> major: presidential candidate robert f. kennedy jr. is running as an independent. he has at times prone to indulging fringe beliefs on things like vaccine safety and what happened on 9/11. we sat down with him this week in nashville and started by exiting about president biden's reluctance to cede power after more than 50 years in office. >> i think he towered that, that reputation and that career. over the past year, by refusing to let go of power. >> major: kennedy equated president biden's hesitancy to then-prsident trump's exit from office when he refused to accept their election results. >> i don't think that president trump did that graciously, and i don't think president biden did, either. >> major: earlier this month, kennedy met with trump at the g.o.p. republican national convention in august, made a proposal to the former

president. >> major: were you in those meetings prepared to endorse president trump and except a role in his administration? >> no. president trump called me -- >> major: is that every part of the discussion, the things i just described? >> we talked about exactly what we discussed because it would be a violation of trust. >> major: that video surface talking with trump on speakerphone p >> it was so good... >> major: kennedy's campaign remains mired in single digits and debts. on the ballot at least ten states and likely to be added to more in the coming weeks. from whom do you believe you would draw more votes, kamala harris or donald trump? >> i hope to draw votes from both of them. right now i draw many more votes from president trump than from -- >> major: is he happy with that? >> is president trump happy? he isn't happy. in fact, the rnc, when i saw him, i told him, yeah, we have to do some thing about that.
